Last Wednesday it was the turn of the Men’s 2 team to travel to Emerson Eagles for their match against Emerson’s 3rd team. It was another last minute switch around of players due to injuries (we seem to be suffering this year!) so in stepped Paul Gunn and yours truly to fill in. With Emerson having the hall only for matches on a Wednesday, it meant we were able to run through the games quickly.
The pairs for the night were:-
Gary Y / Jonas
Andy P / Ross
Kirk / Paul G
This was my first match back after having all of last year out through injury so I was nervous to see how I was going to fair in a competitive situation (I’ve only been back at club since October). With Andy P on the court with me, it was actually quite encouraging when we won our first match 13-21, 15,21. I felt good so we were straight on for the next one and cruised through that 15-21, 11-21 to make it 0-2 to us. Similarly, Gary and Jonas were cruising through their matches winning 13-21, 12-21 then 8-21, 18-21 to take us 0-4 up on the night.
Kirk and Paul weren’t having it so easy. After a close first game losing 21-20, they dropped the match 21-14. However, they picked up the next match and won 15-21, 9-21 to make it 1-5 on the night and secured 2 league points.
Myself and Paul as well as Gary and Jonas went on for our last match. Gary and Jonas won theirs 15-21, 13-21 to secure the bonus league point. Myself and Andy stormed our last match 13-21, 12-21 to make it 1-7 on the night while Kirk and Paul were just going on for their final match.
This was their closest yet and they just fell short in the worst way possible. They lost the first game 21-20 which was hard luck as they had a lead. The next game went to them 15-21 to take it to a decider. However, in the final game, home advantage prevailed and Emerson took it 21-15 to finish 2-7 down on the night.
A great result for the team which extends our lead at the top of the table to 3 points over Frenford. We have a fantastic game difference in our favour should it come down to it at the end of the season.
Next up is a return to Emerson Park for our fixture against Emerson Eagles 4 on the 2nd March.
