Tonight saw the first match for our Mixed 2 team at home to Emerson Eagles.  The match was our first one (for the mixed 2 team) at Hornchurch Leisure Centre so it was going to be strange playing without the home support and on an unfamiliar court.  However, the team rose to the challenge and came out victorious.

It wasn’t without a large slice of luck on our end though.  With the 4th match in progress, Emerson’s number 1 pairing suffered an injury and had to withdraw from the second game.  With one match left to play for their 1st pairing, but no way of playing it, we were granted a 21-0, 21-0 result.

As we were trying out new pairings this season, it was a good match to start the season as we always get a good match against Emerson.

An early injury to Gary meant he was unable to smash properly which hindered his pairing with Lesley meaning they took their second match to 3 games but couldn’t manage to come away with a win.

Myself and Penny started off with a 20-21 loss in the first game which was unfortunate (a shot to the net cost us the game) and then a terrible start to the second game made things too hard to get back on level terms (we were 1-8 down and couldn’t get back on track, eventually losing 14-21).  Our second match against their 2nd pairing was more successful with successive 21-13 / 21-13 wins then we had a none-game win 21-0 21-0 due to Emerson’s injury woes.

With Lisa and David winning their first match and having the injured opposition cutting short their second match, it was on to their third match and the final one of the night.

With the scores evenly poised at 4-4, it was always going to be a nail-biting finish.  With the first game going to Lisa and David, the second game was neck and neck until Emerson’s pair took the lead and closed off the second game.  This led to a final 3rd game decider to decide the overall match.  Both Lisa and David raised their game and managed to pull off a superb 21-14 win to win the match 5-4 and give the 2 points to Corinthians.

The league table is now updated and the full scoresheet it below.  Well done team!  Next up, United Shuttlers.
