Tonight saw the first game of 2014 for our teams and it was the Mixed 2 team at our Hornchurch home venue against United Shuttlers.  Keen to get revenge for the 7-2 loss against Shuttlers in November, it was a makeshift team playing due to David and I not being able to play.

Thankfully, Kenny stepped in to play in David’s place and Tom stepped in to replace me so a big thank you to the both of them.

So, on to the match.

First up were our first pair of Lisa and Kenny to take on Shuttlers’ first pairing.  It must have taken a while for our guys to warm up as they were beaten 10-21 / 7-21.  Their next match against their third pairing was more successful with Lisa and Kenny running out 21-10 / 21-18.  Their last match against their second pairing saw Lisa and Kenny just missing out on the third game by a single point, 15-21 / 21-10 / 20-21.

Second up were Penny and Tom against their second pairing.  With a comfortable win to start them off, it finished 21-16 / 21-15.  They then went up against Shuttlers’ first pairing and, despite taking the match to 3 games, our pair just fell short finishing 11-21 / 21-20 / 11-21.  The final match for Penny and Tom saw them take on the third pairing.  Again, it was a comfortable win 21-19 / 21-17.

Our final pairing of Lesley and Gary had an eventful night to say the least.  They started with a very comfortable win against the opposition’s third pairing, finishing 21-13 / 21-12.  The second match saw them take on the second pair from Shuttlers.  With the opposition taking a commanding lead of 19-10, Lesley and Gary turned up the heat and turned on the style to fight back and complete a superb run of 11 straight points to take the game 21-19.  They then went on to demolish the opposition in the next game 21-17.  They then ended the night against the first pairing who proved too strong for them.  The match ended 6-21 / 14-21.

So, we succeeded in getting the home win under our belt and the match finished 5-4 to Corinthians.  We just missed out on the bonus point (if we’d won 6-3 or better) which instead went to Shuttlers for scoring 4 wins on the night.  The league table has been updated to show the result.  This will be ratified once the league check the signatures and registrations of the players who took part.

The result leaves us in 3rd place in the league, one point behind Wychelm who are our next opponents on the 19th February.

Well done to the team tonight for the great result!
