Last night it was the second fixture of the season for our Ladies A and B pairs in Division 1.  However, it was the first fixture which actually saw some court time as Harold Hill didn’t show up to their fixture.

With Lucy out injured, Paula stepped into the fray and paired up with Jess as the A pair.  Charlotte and Jo were our B pair.

First up on court it was an all home match between our A and B pairs.  The first game got off to a good start and was close all of the way through.  However, Jess and Paula edged ahead and took it 21-18.  The next game swung the other way with Charlotte and Jo comfortably winning 15-21 to take it to a decider.  The decider was played later in the night as the other pairs were finished and sitting off and time was going to be tight.  We’ll come back to the result later…

On the adjacent court, last year’s champions, Harold Hill, had beaten Wychelm comfortably 21-17, 21-16 so it was now time to get another match running.

Jess and Paula went on against Wychelm while Jo and Charlotte took on Harold Hill.

Our A pair flew off the starting blocks and quickly took a sizeable lead which was never in danger of being lost.  The first game was quickly won 21-12.  The second game was a lot closer as Wychelm began to find their rhythm but our girls were just too strong and took it 21-20.

Meanwhile, Charlotte and Jo were having a close game against Harold Hill but unfortunately the reigning champions were just too strong and took the win 17-21 then 13-21.

Now it was time for Jess and Paula to take on the reigning champions to see if they could reverse the fortunes from last year.  The first game was an incredibly close win for our girls, 21-20.  From somewhere, Jess and Paula stepped up a gear and romped the last game 21-13 which was a great result.

The last match of the night was Wychelm’s pair against Charlotte and Jo.  The first game was a game of trading points and staying level right up to the end.  However, our girls were too strong and took it 21-19.  The second game was a disaster for our pair who slumped to a 10-21 defeat meaning a decider was needed (remember, they still had the decider to play against our A pair too!).  Thankfully our girls put the last game behind them and came out fighting.  It went all the way to 20-20 but our girls kept calm and made sure of the win taking it 21-20.

Now, with the games finished and the end of the night approaching, it was back on court for our A pair against our B pair to fight out the decider.  I don’t know if it was because our A pair had an easier previous match or if our B pair were just too tired from the 3 game decider they’d just played but the result was not as close as expected.  Jess and Paula ran away with it 21-13 to make it 100% on the night and go top of the table.

A great showing from Charlotte and Jo to beat Wychelm and only narrowly losing against our A pair.

So, Corinthians A are top on 3 points with Harold Hill second on 2 points.  Our B pair are third on 1 point with Wychelm propping up the table on 0 points.  However, this could all change after the league committee meeting as it will be decided what will happen as a result of the non-event which was the first league fixture at Harold Hill.

Well done ladies.  The next fixture is not until February so plenty more time to get some practice in!
